You don’t need financial independence to quit your job...

You don't need financial independence to quit your job, you need financial confidence.

Hey friends — Joe here.

💡 One Idea Worth Compounding lands every Thursday. One framework, one book, one conversation about finance, investing or income building.

You don’t need financial independence to quit your job. You need financial confidence more.

I keep meeting people who are already financially independent by the numbers. Portfolios big enough to carry them if they managed their spending. And they still don't feel work-optional.

I realised that there are two different concepts to be clear here, and we only ever measure one of them.

Financial independence is a number. You can calculate it to the decimal — 25 times your annual expenses, a 4% withdrawal rate. The spreadsheet was never the hard part.

Financial confidence is a belief about your own capability. That if the salary stops tomorrow, you could make it again.

You can have the first without the second. Most high earners do.

Their independence was accumulated — deliberately, with real discipline. Living below their means for a decade. Saving and investing a serious share of every paycheck. Never selling the stock, through every drawdown.

That is hard work and discipline. I'm not taking it away from anyone. But none of it ever required them to find out whether they could generate income.

That's why "I'll quit when I hit the number" so often doesn't happen. People hit the number but still feeling they need more.

If you are serious about leaving a salary job, be intentional about building the confidence alongside the independence. Not after it.Independence can be accumulated passively. Confidence cannot. You only get it by doing the thing, badly at first, and finding out you survived.

So build both at once. Stack the skill. Test it while the salary is still landing and a failed experiment costs you a weekend instead of your mortgage. Then test it again.

The more times you've tested it, the less the first number matters.

What small steps could you start taking to build financial confidence?
